LoMaS® CASE STUDIES

Duferco-Farrell

Business Challenges:

  • Duferco, a European-based company, purchased a large domestic steel operation.
  • Duferco needed to retain control over logistics, minimize logistics costs and reduce staff, while providing excellent logistics performance to customers.
  • Logistics requirements included multi-modal transportation management capabilities, ISO 9002 tools, and remote access to the system by many non-logisticians in remote locations.

Solution:

  • ADS Logistics developed requirements analysis in conjunction with Duferco-Farrell.
  • Selected and implemented appropriate LoMaS® functionality, including inventory management, rate management, dispatch, load track/trace, and automated billing (freight payment) and margin reporting systems.
  • LoMaS® implemented as an ASP system.

Business Value:

  • Duferco-Farrell acquired the requisite real-time control and visibility.
  • Logistics management FTE costs were lowered by a factor of 4-1.
  • Time to benefit very short.
  • Business-related logistics reporting accessible from Duferco’s European headquarters.

USX - Transtar

 Business Challenges:

  • USX-Transtar had responsibility for providing metals logistics for a new USX company (Straightline).
  • USX-Transtar was seeking a sophisticated, web-enabled software product to support complete metals logistics through the metals supply chain.
  • Selected system needed to be able to integrate with existing USX systems.
  • Selected system needed to be up-and-running very quickly.

Solution:

  • Developed system requirements and functional specifications, as part of a customer team.
  • Selected appropriate LoMaS® functionality required to solve logistics Issues and added additional capability to handle load aggregation/optimization.
  • Implemented LoMaS®as an ASP service for USX-Transtar, and integrated it with other USX legacy systems supporting USX-Straightline.

Business Value:

  • Provided USX-Straightline with a tool to manage the movement (shipment through processing and warehousing) of steel for a unique "virtual company" business model.
  • Quick time-to-benefit, with complete installation, integration, testing and training within 90 days.

CPR - Steelcare

Business Challenges:

  • Major metals customer (Algoma) specified critical performance criteria for CPR to bid on business:
    • Product visibility.
    • Product integrity.
    • Process cycle time.
  • Logistics costs and cycle times were critical, with too much reliance on limited trucking capacity.
  • Current logistics processes were not up to the task, resulting in reduced sales and lost revenue opportunities for CPR.

Solution:

  • Provided analysis of current logistics processes and issues.
  • Selected appropriate LoMaS® functionality required to solve logistics issues, and made minor modifications to the system.
  • Implemented LoMaS® as an ASP service for CPR.

Business Value:

  • Metals logistics management FTE costs were lowered by a factor of 5-1.
  • Algoma's material control and visibility were greatly enhanced; product integrity issues were resolved through system-wide visibility.
  • CPR would not have been able to deliver transportation services without LoMaS® system.
  • LoMaS® provided a win for both CRP and Algoma.
